Occupational Therapy

The main aim and objective of the Occupational Therapy department is to assist and improve fine motor function, visual-perceptual skills, handwriting and independence in activities of daily living in order to improve the functioning and participation of learners in and out of the classroom, hostel, at home and at social gatherings as well as in recreational environments. They department plays an important role in applying for exam concessions for those learners with specific barriers to learning.

The team conducts home visits if necessary to equip learners living with physical disability in their home environment and give support to the parents. They form part of a multi-disciplinary outreach programme to assess and treat babies, in need of therapy, up to the age of 3 years.

The Occupational Therapy department provides the following interventions after comprehensive assessments:

  1. Occupational Therapy in both group and individual settings;
  2. Provision of home support programmes;
  3. Procurement of assistive devices, training on how to care for and use the devices and issuing of the appropriate devices;
  4. Arranging of  eye assessments when necessary, after consultation with the class teachers;
  5. Participating in the multi-disciplinary school team;
  6. Training hostel staff to transfer a learner living with a disability and the correct usage of assistive devices;
  7. To assist in optimal positioning of learners in the classroom according to their strengths and weaknesses;
  8. School-to-work programme for the DCAPS learners to teach them basic skills needed for the labour market and to reach their optimal potential;
  9. Consulting with and referring to other health professionals and specialists;
  10. Consulting with teachers;

Our ultimate aim is to support children and their care takers/ families, to give each child a fair chance to optimal learning, to develop and to succeed in life.
