The goal of the speech therapists at Muriel Brand School is to improve the skills underlying academic success in order for our learners to excel in life. These skills include, but are not limited to, receptive and expressive language, listening skills, phonics and communication skills.
Through continues professional development our therapists have additional qualifications to assist in specific problem areas, e.g. Neuro-Development Therapy, PROMPT and Phonographixs. These courses benefit the treatment of dysarthria, severe speech difficulties, and reading and spelling problems.
Our thereapists are also experienced in the treatment of feeding disorders, stuttering, articulation errors and apraxia of speech. Our four audiologists assist in hearing assessments and the management of learners with hearing impairments. Together we work as a dedicated team in the holistic approach to every learner.
We provide the following interventions in our department:
Individual and group therapy
Home programs to reinforce carry-over of new skills at home
Providing assistive devices
Hearing tests
Providing hearing aids to needy learners
Working within a multi-disciplinary team
Consulting with, and referring to, other health care practitioners
