For Learners With Special Educational Needs

Physiotherapy

The Muriel Brand physiotherapy department is a well-equipped department with a dedicated team. Physiotherapy takes a neurodevelopmental approach with all the therapists either trained in NDT and/or MAES or in the process of being trained. The objective of the physiotherapy department is to improve gross motor function in order to improve learners participation in the school, home and recreational (e.g. sport, hobbies, and play) environments.

The physiotherapy department provides the following interventions, after conducting a full neurodevelopmental assessment:

  1. Physiotherapy in both the group and individual setting.
  2. Providing home programs, that are functional and part of daily activities to lessen the burden on parents.
  3. Providing assistive devices.
  4. Working within the multi-disciplinary school team:

For optimal positioning and participation in class.

To transfer learners’ into and out of school transport.

To conduct home visits to optimises the learners’ home environments and educate caregivers.

  5. Consulting with, and referring to, other health professionals and specialists.

Baby Therapy:   An outreach program provided by the multi-disciplinary team (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy) provides a free assessment and weekly therapy for children, under the age of 3, if the team feels that therapy would be beneficial.
